This is a simple, safe, painless diagnostic procedure
which doesn’t involve radiation. High frequency sound waves
capture breast abnormalities. For women who are pregnant
or under 30, it is the first test to evaluate breast lumps
and pain. For all other women, it is used in addition to
mammography when clinically warranted or when more specific
information is recommended based on mammography results.
Breast ultrasound can not be used in place of a mammogram
as a screening tool but is extremely helpful as an adjunct
tool to mammography. Sonography used to evaluate questionable
or suspicious areas found on screening or diagnostic mammograms
allows us to see the characteristics of a lump, mass, or
other finding. These characteristics will help the radiologist
determine level of suspicion – whether the area looks benign
(not cancer) or suspicious, requiring additional testing
and biopsy to rule out malignancy (cancer).
